Ratargul Swamp Forest is a little Pantanal in Bangladesh. It is also called as Amazon of Bangladesh or Deshi Amazon or you can say Banglar Amazon. It is an evergreen and mystic forest as well as one of the best freshwater swamp forests in this world.
It is located at the Goain Ghat area of Sylhet Division in Bangladesh. The beauty of this forest is bloomed mainly in the rainy season. The traveling taste of Ratargul Swamp Forest is like to visit the Sundarbans but the water is not salty like Sundarban. It a fresh and clean water forest in the bank of Goain River and linked with the canal Chengir Khal. But the flow of the river is extreme during the rainy season. it is the only swamp forest located in Bangladesh and one of the few freshwater swamp forests in the world. The forest is naturally conserved under the Department of Forestry, Government of Bangladesh.
This evergreen forest is situated by the river Goain and linked with the canal named Chengir Khal. Most of the trees grow here are Pongamia pinnata (Koroch tree). The forest goes under 20-30 feet water in the rainy season. Rest of the year the water level is about 10 feet deep. Really it would be fantastic experience to see the tree diving into the crystal water. Though in winter you will get another scenery. Such as after decreasing the water, there will be rise murta and jail (one kinds of Rattan) garden. This is another beauty of this forest. In the rainy season the forest keep in water for four to seven months. You have to enter there with small boat. Goain River will be the way to reach there.
Along with sight-seeing bank of river you can see the high hills of Mizoram (an Indian states). You will be fascinated to see this lovely nature. If you visit there in winter you will not get the real scenery of Ratargul. Because that time you will see the dry leaf is dropping, the lake of water turn into small hole and sometimes it is using the country road for walking. However, in the rainy season it get full of its youth. It fills with water. Lots of fishes and aquatic animals get their life back. The hills rainfall and stream rush to Ratargul. It fills with water. Most of the tree dive into water. Some are standing up to rise their head on the water. Water and tree mix together. Small fishes jump into the water.
